| Donors The SCCLA Scholarship Fund is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization which awards scholarships to law students based on academic merit, financial need and demonstrated commitment to serving the Asian American community. The scholarships are bestowed in honor of former SCCLA members and longtime Chinese American leaders: the late George S. Lee, Judge Jack B. Tso and Ming Y. Moy. The Ming Y. Moy Memorial Scholarship is endowed by the Moy family. The fund also awards a scholarship in honor of Justice Elwood Lui, a partner at the law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue. A graduate of UCLA (BS, MBA, JD), Justice Lui began his career as Deputy Attorney General for the State of California. He served as a judge of both the Los Angeles Municipal Court and Superior Court and further served as a Justice in the California Court of Appeals. Justice Lui helped found SCCLA. The Justice Elwood Lui Scholarship is endowed by the law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue. In 1999, the fund awarded its first scholarship in honor of Lee Gum Low. Mr. Low’s long history of community involvement includes tenures as an officer of the Chinese Six Companies and the Loong Kong Tin Yee Family Association in San Francisco and Oakland Chinatowns, as a member of its national board and a term as the First Vice President of its international board. Mr. Low was committed to public discourse on issues impacting all Chinese Americans, like racial prejudice, discrimination, immigration laws and inequality of justice. He believed in the importance of leadership and the value of political involvement to advance Chinese American interests. The Lee Gum Low Presidential Scholarship is endowed by Ron and Wanda Low and is awarded to a law student who has demonstrated leadership ability and service to the community. This year, the fund awards its first scholarships in honor of Margaret and Ned Good, who have generously supported two scholarships. The Goods were motivated to support the fund because in the many years they have worked in their law office, their clients have taught them to value and cherish life. Through their scholarships, the Goods hope that all aspiring lawyers will remember that every client is important and that the clients are always at the heart of the legal profession. SCCLA also sponsors two fellowships at the Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California, in Los Angeles. These fellowships of $1,500 each honor the memory of the late Y.C. Hong, the first Chinese American admitted to practice law in California and the first to practice law in Los Angeles. Mr. Hong was also a prominent leader in the Chinese American community and the national president of the Chinese-American Citizens Alliance. |
